“The Comforter- a gentle devotional for growing hearts”
I had someone ask me today about what Jesus meant when He said, His Father would send a Comforter.
Here is how I understand this according to Scriptures.
There is one God —
the Father.
Jesus is His Son.
And the Comforter is God’s own Spirit.
There is not a third person.
There is not a separate being.
But the Spirit the Comforter is God’s own breath, God’s own power, God’s own presence, and God’s life poured out.
This is exactly how I understand it from Genesis to Revelation.
The Comforter is the Spirit of God.
From the beginning-
Genesis 1:2
“The Spirit of God moved upon the waters.”
Joel 2:28
God says He will pour out His Spirit.
Psalm 51:11
David says, “Take not Your Holy Spirit from me.”
This is just a few…
But as I continue to try to understand God’s Truth, I see that…
The Spirit belongs to God.
It is not a separate person, but it is His own presence.
This same Spirit dwelled in Jesus and Scripture says at:
Luke 1:35
Jesus was conceived by the Spirit.
John 1:32-33
The Spirit descended and remained on Him.
Matthew 12:28
Jesus cast out demons by the Spirit of God.
So the Spirit in Jesus is and was the same Spirit that hovered over creation.
Filled the prophets, and empowered the apostles.
The Spirit is also called the Spirit of Christ not because Jesus is the Spirit, but because:
The Spirit was given through Jesus. The Spirit reveals Jesus. And the Spirit continues Jesus’ ministry.
Paul uses both phrases interchangeably at
Romans 8:9
“Spirit of God”
“Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9)
Same Spirit. Same source.
Same work. Different emphasis.
Just like “the Spirit of wisdom” or “the Spirit of truth” — it describes function, not identity.
Jesus never said the Spirit was a separate God.
He said:
“The Spirit comes from the Father.”
The Spirit is sent in Jesus’ name. And the Spirit is the Father’s promise.
Everything Jesus taught.
One God — the Father.
One Son — Jesus.
One Spirit — God’s own Spirit.
The night before Jesus was crucified, He spoke words that carried both sorrow and hope.
He told His disciples He was returning to the Father, the One who sent Him, the One whose works He had done, the One whose presence had been with Him from the very beginning.
But Jesus did not leave His disciples with fear or loss.
He left them with a promise.
John 14:16
“I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever.”
Jesus was going back to the Father, but the Father would send His Spirit.
The same Spirit that moved at creation. The same Spirit that filled the prophets.
The same Spirit that rested upon Jesus Himself.
This Comforter was not a stranger. This Comforter was not a new deity.
This Comforter was not a third figure to learn.
It was the Spirit of God. God’s very presence, poured out, given, and dwelling within His people.
Jesus said the Spirit would:
Teach us, guide us, comfort us, strengthen us, remind us of His words, and reveal Truth.
In other words, the Spirit would continue the work Jesus had begun not from the outside, but from within.
When Jesus walked the earth, He could only be in one place at a time.
But when the Spirit came, God’s presence would now fill every believer, every home, and every heart.
Jesus returned to the Father, but through the Spirit, the Comforter, we were not left alone.
For the same Spirit that filled Jesus now fills us.
The same Spirit that empowered the apostles, now empowers us.
The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now gives life to our mortal bodies.
This is the Father’s promise. And this is the Son’s assurance.
The Comforter is not distant. The Comforter is not complicated. And the Comforter is not confusing.
The Comforter is the very presence of God. The very
breath of God. The life of God. The power of God, and
the love of God dwelling within those who believe.
Oh, how God loves us…
Dear Father in heaven,
Thank You for sending Your Son to reveal Your heart and Your truth.
And thank You that when He returned to You, You did not leave us comfortless.
You poured out Your own Spirit.
The same Spirit that rested on Jesus.
The same Spirit that moved through the prophets.
The same Spirit that brings life and Truth.
Fill us, Father, with Your presence.
Open our eyes to Scriptures.
Soften our hearts to hear Your voice.
Let Your Spirit comfort, teach, and guide every reader who longs to grow.
Give milk to the newborn, and meat to the hungry.
And let Your Truth be received with gentleness and clarity.
Father, continue to teach us, guide us, and strengthen us.
In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.
Have a blessed day,
God loves you and so do I…
