“Bringing Our Heart Before God”
I was thinking this morning on the books of Psalms and how some of these Scriptures help us manage our emotions, and show us how to bring our heart before God.
The Psalms are also one of Scripture’s greatest gifts because they show us something honest. They show us that God never asked His people to hide their emotions. But instead, God invites us to bring every feeling – joy, fear, anger, confusion, and hope directly into His presence.
David, Asaph, and the other psalmists did not pretend to be strong. They did not filter their words to sound “spiritual.” They cried, they questioned, they rejoiced, they repented, and they waited. And through it all, God met them.
So when our emotions feel overwhelming, the Psalms teaches us to pour out our hearts.
Psalm 62:8
Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
The psalmists also show us that emotional honesty is not weakness. It is worship.
God already knows what is in our hearts and God invites us to speak it.
Awe, and wait, when emotions feel confusing, the Psalms teach us to remember God’s character. Over and over, the writers pause and remind themselves that God is faithful. God is near. And God is our refuge.
This remembering steadies our heart when our feelings are shifting like waves.
Also, when our emotions feel heavy, the Psalms teach us to redirect our focus.
Many psalms begin in distress but end in praise. Not because the situation changed, but because the psalmist chose to lift his eyes to God. This is the quiet discipline of faith. Acknowledging the feeling, and then choosing to look toward God’s goodness.
And finally, when our emotions feel stuck, the Psalms teach us to wait with hope.
Psalm 27:14
Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!
Waiting is not passive. It is trusting that God is working in the unseen places of our hearts.
There is so much more the Psalms teaches us. Not only honesty. But it brings us deep comfort. It shows us perspective, and strength in waiting, praise as warfare, remembrance, guidance, and above all it gives us hope, and shows us God’s love.
The Psalms are not meant to be skimmed they are meant to be lived. If we open them slowly, prayerfully, and personally we will
discover how God meets us there, and
then God’s word becomes a safe place for our heart.
Oh, how God loves us ❤️
Dear Father in heaven,
You see every heart that pauses to read these words today.
You know the emotions each one of us carry, some spoken, some hidden, and some we do not yet understand.
Teach us, through Your Psalms, how to bring every feeling to You without fear.
Steady our thoughts with Your truth.
Quiet our worries with Your presence.
Lift our eyes when our hearts feel heavy.
And give us a hunger to search Your Word for ourself. Discovering comfort, strength, and direction in every page.
Let Your Spirit breathe peace over us today.
In Jesus name, Amen.
Have a Blessed day
God loves you ❤️
and so do I ❤️
