“Where Your Treasure Is”

Matthew 6:21
For where your treasures is, there will your heart be also.

What Jesus meant by “Treasure”

In Scripture, treasure is anything we value, protect, pursue, or depend on.

It is not limited to money. It includes relationships, comfort, control, reputation, success, possessions and even ministry itself.

Jesus is revealing a spiritual law when He says, “Our heart will follow our treasure.”

Whatever we treasure most will shape our desires, our decisions, our emotions, and our direction.

Our earthly treasures can not hold us and
Jesus warns earlier in Matthew 6 that earthly treasures can be stolen, destroyed,
lost, changed and taken away.

Matthew 6:19-20
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Our earthly treasures are unstable because
our life changes, people around us change,  our circumstances shift, our health declines and money comes and goes. And when our hearts cling to unstable things, we become unstable with them.

This is why many believers feel anxious or spiritually scattered. Because their treasure has quietly shifted from heavenly things to earthly things.

Our heavenly treasures matter because our heavenly treasures are anything that carries eternal value in God’s eyes.

This includes our obedience, our faithfulness, our love, our forgiveness,
our holiness, our serving others, our sharing the gospel, our prayer, our generosity and our trusting God in our  trials.

These kinds of treasures can not be lost, stolen, or destroyed.
They follow us into eternity.

Jesus cared about where we placed our treasure because He knew that whatever treasure holds us, would hold our heart.

And Jesus wants our heart whole,
steady, anchored and free.

So when our treasure is in or on heavenly things- Our priorities align with God.
Our emotions stabilize. Our decisions become clearer. Our peace deepens. Our purpose sharpens. Our identity becomes secure and our joy becomes untouchable.

Heavenly treasures produce a heavenly heart.

So how can we fix our treasure on the right things? Here are some practical daily ways that will help us to shift our treasure back to God.

We can seek God first by begining our day with Him.
We can guard our thoughts, because our mind reveals our treasures.
We can simplify our life by removing what pulls us away from God.
We can give generously, this is not about money, it is giving of ourself and all we have, because giving breaks earthly attachments.
We can serve quietly, because God sees what others do not see.
We can choose eternal priorities by obedience over comfort.
And we can surrender ourselves daily to God, because our treasures shift when we give control to Him.

Our  daily choices reveal and reshape what we treasure.

Example:
If we chose comfort over obedience-
Then comfort has became our treasure.

If we chose control over surrender-
Then control has became our treasure.

If we have chose God’s presence over distraction-
Then God has became our treasure.

Our choices point to our treasure like a compass points which way is north.

And whatever we feed grows and whatever we starve weakens.

Like time in the Word feeds heavenly treasures, and worry feeds earthly treasures and generosity feeds eternal treasures.

Joshua 24:15
And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in who’s land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Oh, how God loves us ❤️

Dear Father in heaven,

I come before You with a open  heart.

Reveal to us, Father, anything we have treasured above You.

Loosen our grip on the temporary and anchor our desires in what is eternal.

Teach us to value what You value, love what You love, and pursue what draws us closer to Your heart.

Let our treasure be in Your presence, in Your Word, in Your will, and on Your kingdom.

Shape our priorities, steady our emotions, and align our hearts with heavenly things.

In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.

Have a blessed day
God loves you ❤️
and so do I ❤️
