“Walking by Faith, Not by Sight”
2 Corinthians 5:6–8
So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
Paul’s words in this passage are deeply comforting when we are able to slow down and read them carefully. He was teaching the believers how to live with confidence.
Not because of what they could see, but because of what God had promised.
Paul said that while we are “at home in the body” we are “absent from the Lord.”
Paul was not speaking of spiritual distance. Because spiritually, God is near and His Spirit dwells within us, and Christ intercedes for us. But physically, we are still in this earthly body, waiting for the day when faith becomes sight.
Paul was not describing an immediate transition at death. Paul was describing the present condition of all believers who are alive today. We are physically absent from the Lord because we are still in this mortal body.
Paul then reminds us that our confidence comes from faith, not from what our eyes can see.
We believe in the resurrection. We believe in Christ’s return. And we believe that one day we will be gathered to Him.
But we have not seen that day yet.
We walk in hope. Hope in what is promised, and not yet revealed.
This is the heart of Paul’s message.
Our courage comes from trusting God’s future, not from interpreting our present.
Paul says he would be-
“well pleased rather to be absent from the body and present with the Lord.”
Paul does not say that the moment he leaves his body he will instantly be in the Lord’s presence.
Paul simply says that when that day comes, when he is finally freed from this earthly body, he will be pleased to be with the Lord.
This understanding aligns perfectly with the hope of the resurrection, the gathering of the saints, and the promise of Christ’s return. It is the same hope Paul teaches in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and the same unity Jesus prayed for in John chapter 17.
We do not die and immediately find ourselves in the Lord’s presence.
We sleep in Christ. We wait for the trumpet.
We wait for the resurrection. And we wait for the day when mortality is swallowed up by life.
This is not something to fear. It is something to look forward to.
Just like Paul, we can say with confidence-
“I will be well pleased on the day when I am absent from this body and present with my Lord.”
Until then, I will walk by faith. I will live in hope, and I will trust in what I can not yet see.
Oh, how God loves us ❤️
Dear Father in heaven,
Thank You for the hope You have placed within us. A hope anchored not in feelings, but in Your promises.
Teach us to walk by faith every day, trusting in the future You have prepared for Your people.
Strengthen our hearts as we wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son.
Keep us faithful, steady, and full of expectation for the day when we will be present with Him.
Until that day, help us live with courage, with holiness, and with the peace that comes from knowing Your Spirit dwells within us.
