“Watch”
Throughout Scripture, we are repeatedly told to “Watch.”
It is one small word, but it carries layers of meanings. Like alertness, readiness, discernment, protection, and spiritual sobriety.
When Scripture says “Watch.”
It is not only speaking of physical eyesight.
It is calling our heart to stay awake.
Jesus warned that in the last days, many hearts would grow cold. Indicating that many would fall asleep spiritually.
So, one meaning of “Watch” means to resist spiritual drowsiness and stay spiritually awake.
Stay awake to God’s voice.
Stay awake to Truth.
Stay awake to the condition of our own heart.
And stay awake to the times we are living in.
Because, if we are sleeping we can not discern danger. If we are sleeping we can not hear God clearly.
And if we are sleeping we may not be able to stand firm when deception rises.
Jesus also repeatedly ties this command “Watch” to His coming, and to be ready for His return.
This meaning of “Watch” means we live with expectation. We keep our life in order. We walk in obedience. We do not walk in carelessness.
And we live as if Jesus could return at any moment.
Because, “Watching” keeps our priorities aligned with eternity. Instead of on temporary things.
“Watch” also means we need to guard our heart.
Scripture teaches us that our heart is the well-spring of life.
So “Watching” means guarding what enters us and what influences us.
We should be paying attention to what shapes our thoughts. We should be careful with what we allow into our spirit. We should pay attention to when our peace is disturbed.
And we should recognize when temptations are creeping in.
Because, a guarded heart stays soft toward God and a guarded heart stays resistant to the enemy.
“Watch” also means to be alert to spiritual warfare.
Peter said the enemy prowls like a roaring lion.
So, “Watching” here means to be aware of spiritual attacks. Not fearful of them, but discerning of them.
So, we recognize when the enemy is stirring confusion, division, or discouragement in our hearts and minds.
We stay alert to subtle lies.
We notice when old temptations try to return.
And we are aware of the spiritual heaviness and the distractions.
Because, we can not fight what we do not see. And “Watching” keeps us from being blindsided.
Jesus rebuked the religious leaders for knowing the weather but not the spiritual season.
“Watching” means understanding what is happening around you through God’s lens and to pay attention.
So, this “Watch” is discerning the spiritual climate. Recognizing fulfilled prophecy. Understanding the moral and cultural shifts.
And to see how Scripture is aligning with current events.
Because, “Watching” keeps us anchored in Gods Truth instead of swept away by confusion all around us.
Jesus told His disciples to “Watch and pray.” “Watching” is not passive.
It is prayerful.
So, we pray with awareness. Intercede for others. Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit. And keep our spirit open and listening.
Because, prayer with out “Watching” becomes routine. And “Watching” with out prayer becomes fear. And together, they keep us strong and steady.
Our faith, our family, our calling, our peace, these are treasures.
And Watching means protecting what God has given us. (our treasures)
So, we notice when the enemy tries to steal our joy. We guard our home spiritually. We pay attention to our relationships.
And we protect our walk with God.
Because, what we do not watch over, the enemy will try to weaken. Steal, kill, and destroy.
This instruction,”Watch”
is repeated in Scripture because God loves us. Because God knows how easily our heart can drift.
Because God knows deception will increase in the last days. Because God wants us prepared and not panicked. Because God wants us walking in victory and not in confusion.
“Watching” is not about fear. It is about awareness, readiness, and intimacy with God.
God Word instructs us how to “Watch.”
Oh, how God loves us ❤️
Dear Father in heaven,
Thank You for calling us to “Watch,” not in fear, but in faith.
Open our eyes to see what You want us to see.
Keep our hearts awake, our spirits alert, and our minds anchored in Your Truth.
Teach us to “Watch” with wisdom, with discernment, and with peace.
Help us guard our hearts, protect our homes, and stay ready for the return of Your Son, our Lord and Savior.
Strengthen us to stand firm in a world full of distraction and deception.
Let Your Holy Spirit be our guide, our teacher, and our reminder of all that is true.
In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.
Have a blessed day
God loves you ❤️
and so do I ❤️
