“Who Do We Pray To”
In Matthew Jesus directs our prayers to the Father. Matthew 6:9
In this manner therefore pray:
“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name.”
Jesus does not point His disciples to a vague spiritual force, nor to Himself.
He points them to His Father/Our Father. The One True God, the Source of all life, the One who hears, sees, and knows.
Later, in the book of John, Jesus adds a crucial detail: John 16:23
And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you,”whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.”
You can read more in this chapter where Jesus is talking with His disciples.
And He tells them, “and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.”
Jesus said ask in His name… why?
Because we come not in our own righteousness, but in Christ’s.
Jesus is the Mediator who opens the way to the Father. 1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Praying in Jesus name means we are praying according to His character, His will, His truth. This should be the position of our heart. A recognition that we are in Christ. And so we approach the Father through Christ. Praying in Jesus’ name.
“Our Father…”
We acknowledge God’s place, God’s holiness, and God’s authority.
We come as His children- known, loved and welcomed.
“Hallowed be Thy Name”
This is worship woven into our prayer…
We are honoring God and His Holiness.
And refusing to use His name lightly, casually, or without reverance.
“Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done…”
We submit our desires to His purposes.
We ask for His rule to shape our hearts.
And surrender our plans.
“Give us this day our daily bread”
We acknowledge our dependence.
We ask for what we need. Daily bread could be our food, our strength, our wisdom, our peace… whatever we need for this day.
“Forgive us our debts”
We confess without excuses. We bring our failures and shortcomings into His light.
And we ask for cleansing and restoration.
“As we forgive others”
We extend what we have received. We choose mercy because we have been shown mercy.
“Lead us not into temptation”
We ask for guidance away from the paths that weaken us. And we acknowledge our vulnerability.
“Deliver us from evil”
We ask for rescue from the enemies schemes, lies, and traps. We ask for protection spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
“For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever”
We end in praise… We acknowledge that everything begins and ends with God.
His Kingdom, His Power, His Glory, forever unchanging.
And we ask in Jesus name…
Not because we are worthy, but because Christ is worthy..
Prayer as Jesus has taught us protects us from praying to “energy,” “the universe,” or vague spirituality. It protects us from praying to saints, angels, or created beings. It protects us from praying to Jesus instead of Our Father. And it protects us from praying in our own strength or worthiness.
It anchors us in our identity as God’s children.
Oh, how God loves us that He gave His only begotten Son ❤️
Dear Father in heaven,
I come before You with reverence, knowing Your Name is holy and Your ways are perfect.
Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, who opened the way for us to approach You with confidence and peace.
For teaching us to pray with clarity and humility. Speaking to You, “Our Father”
Father, continue to align our hearts with Your will, steady our steps in Your truth, and let our prayers rise from faith, not fear.
In the Name of Your Son, Jesus, our Mediator and our Savior, Amen.
