“Called and Chosen”
“Wheat and Tares”
This morning I was having a conversation about the scripture where Jesus says many are called but few are chosen.
Matthew 22:14
“For many are called, but few are chosen.”
This points to God’s universal invitation, but only those who respond faithfully, like wheat among tares are gathered into His kingdom at the final judgment.
God’s invitation goes out to all of us.
But not everyone responds with genuine obedience or transformation.
God invites all of us into His kingdom through the gospel. But the chosen are those who respond with faith, repentance, and perseverance.
The called and the chosen is the difference between hearing and responding and between being invited and being prepared.
This reminded me of a study I did back in September last year on wheat and tares.
So today I will share some of this again.
“Wheat and Tares Growing Together”
Scripture
Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43
“Let both grow together until the harvest…”
Jesus tells of a farmer who sows good seed in his field, but while everyone sleeps, an enemy sows tares (weeds) among the wheat.
When the servants notice, they ask if they should pull the tares up. The master says no, lest they uproot the wheat, too.
Instead, he instructs them to let both grow together until harvest, when the separation will be done.
Jesus explains that the field is the world, but we also see this dynamic within the church.
Wheat and tares sit side by side in pews, serve in ministries, and even speak the name of Jesus.
Yet only God knows the heart.
(We are not the judges.)
The servants wanted to uproot the tares immediately. But the Master forbids it.
Why? Because in our zeal, we might misjudge and harm the wheat.
Only God sees the heart clearly.
Our role is not to separate but to grow faithfully.
The wheat and the tares are allowed to grow together because of God’s mercy.
God delays judgment to give time for repentance.
The presence of tares tests the wheat, refining our patience, love, and discernment.
This also reveals our own hearts.
Do we long for justice or for mercy?
This is the final separation.
Jesus says the angels will do the separating at the end of the age.
You can read this in Matthew chapter 13:
The wheat will be gathered into His barn, and the tares burned. This is not a threat.
It is a promise of justice and restoration.
In the end God, will make all things right.
I pray we might all check our hearts daily and ask this question.
Am I wheat or am I a tare?
This is not a question of outward appearance but inward desire.
Do we hunger for righteousness?
Do we grieve over sin?
Do we love God’s Truth, even when it convicts us?
Do we bear fruit in keeping with repentance?
The wheat bends low under the weight of its grain. The tares stand tall and empty.
And humility is often the mark of the true.
Both of these teachings emphasize:
God’s patience now, and God’s justice later.
God calls everyone, but only those who respond with genuine faith become the chosen.
Just like wheat and tares grow together until the harvest.
People may look similar outwardly, but God sees our heart.
And at the final judgment, the true and the false will be separated.
Oh, how God loves us ❤️
Dear Father in heaven,
Your Son is the sower of good seed, the righteous judge, and the Lord and King of the harvest.
Today, I ask that You search our hearts.
Are we wheat or tare? Called or chosen?
If we have lived in pretense, please forgive us.
If we have judged others wrongly, please humble us.
If we have grown weary among the weeds, please strengthen us.
Let our roots grow deep in You.
Let our fruit be love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Let us not fear the presence of tares, and let us not fear whether we are called or chosen, but let us trust Your timing and Your justice.
Make us faithful in the field, gracious to our neighbor, and watchful for the harvest.
And when the angels come with our Lord and King, may we be found bowed low, heavy with grace, ready for Your barn, and
ready for Your glory.
In Your Son’s precious name, Amen
Have a blessed day 🙏
God loves you ❤️
and so do I ❤️
